Saintes lose tough one to Scotus

St. Albert lost a close game to No. 4 Columbus Scotus (Nebraska, Class B) 3-2 in girls soccer at the Council Bluffs Recreation Complex Thursday.

"They are always competing for the state championship in Nebraska," said St. Albert coach Randy Salyers. "They have given us some big losses in the past. I think the close game is a sign of our progress."

Scotus opened the scoring in the first half off of a penalty kick.

Gina Assman tied the game at one goal apiece with 6:53 remaining in the first half with an assist from Sophie Bartels.

In the second half, a St. Albert player inadvertently touched the ball while falling to the ground, and Scotus standout Katie Brickmann scored on the penalty kick.

Assmann once again tied the game, this time on an assist from Becca Meade, with 14 minutes remaining in the game. Assmann scored with a one-on-one opportunity against the goalie.

Seven minutes later, Scotus bounced a shot off of the goal post and then held on for a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

"I think we're coming along pretty good," said Salyers. "Our underclassmen are getting stronger."

Salyers credited midfielders Molly Collins, Becca Meade, Rachel Showers and Krista Kennebeck for solid play in the middle. Molly Vermillion and Aileen Mooney had strong games on the defensive side.

St. Albert faces large schools at the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Tournament this weekend. Today, the Saintes square off against North Scott.
