Lewis Central holds off Saintes

Lewis Central defeated city rival St. Albert 2-1 in a girls soccer game at Lewis Central Monday night.

Wind played a major factor in the game with strong gusts blowing from the south.

"We had to adjust when passing into the wind," said L.C. coach John DeVries. "We emphasized short passes and keeping the ball down. Attempting long kicks wasn't a good idea."

The wind favored L.C. in the first half as the Titans took advantage and jumped ahead 2-0 by halftime.

Lacey Stazzoni scored first off of a Tori VonMende pass at the 13:00 mark. Kaleigh Pearcy scored an unassisted goal from 20 yards out just before halftime.

"We developed some depth today with two freshmen coming off the bench to score," said DeVries. "We played 16 girls and it was a solid team effort."

St. Albert got on the scoreboard with about 10 minutes left in the game when Krista Kennebeck scored off of a throw in from Molly Vermillion.

"With the wind and the crown on the field, it was difficult to keep the ball on the field," said St. Albert coach Randy Salyers. "Our keeper, Caitlin Cool had two punts carry downwind for 75 yards."

Lewis Central improved its record to 2-1 on the season. St. Albert fell to 1-1.

St. Albert faces Thomas Jefferson Wednesday in a make-up game at C.B. Stadium scheduled for a 4 p.m. varsity start. Lewis Central travels to Omaha Burke Thursday with a 3 p.m. start time.
