Sunday Morning Coffee Club

Cheaper Than Therapy

Re-Set

I have not logged on to Facebook, for at least a year, or any of the other social networking platforms.  I only signed up for Facebook on the insistence of my kids.  For some reason I did not embrace the concept of posting on someone’s wall.  Why would anyone want to know that I am shopping at Wal Mart at 7:30 Sunday morning “In my sweats no less!”
I cannot wrap my head around the need that some people have that makes them share their private thoughts and feelings with the world.  Seriously what good could come from me having a means by which to convey my random thoughts to each and every one of you?
I do not have a legal department, or editors that proof read everything I say or write and I have been called on the proverbial carpet, for my veiled attempt at being witty, cute or funny.  So that’s why I have chosen to basically keep my opinions to myself.
For example; while sitting at the Wells Fargo auditorium last Monday I felt both sadness and happiness.  Sadness of course because the Falcons were being beat by a very good Danville Bulldog team, who eventually were the runner up for the second year in a row.  And happy because this year’s edition of Falcon Basketball exemplified, what some call, the “St. Albert Way.” The St. Albert Way is no secret formula, it consists of Hard work, Never give up, Good Sportsmanship, and of course it’s about the Team.
Year after year we see a group of seniors that move on from a life they have known for many years, into the real world.  I find myself feeling the same way every year.  How will next year’s teams do?  Surely we can’t do as well next year; we are losing some great kids.  But every year the seniors always step up and keep the tradition alive.
Now is about the time that if I had a Lawyer on retainer or an editor they would be advising me to edit what I am about to say…………….
I fear that there is change in the wind; I fear that we are getting spoiled.  This is a slippery slope and is very hard to stop once you start settling for less.  To be the best you have to beat the best.  Hidden agendas that take away from the goal of being the best in all aspects of the community will erode the core beliefs into the mindset that it’s alright to take the easy path.
This year’s boys’ basketball team overcame everyone’s expectations, mine included, by playing six or seven highly ranked bigger schools they developed the skill sets to make it to the state tournament.   I believe that if this year’s team would have played a lesser schedule they would not have made it as far as they did.
So let’s re-set and take a little breather before tennis, track, softball, baseball and golf take the stage and I hope that we as a community do not dissemble the rich traditions that make up the “St. Albert Way!”
