Falcons Defense Holds On in AMAZING Finish For State Title

The St Albert Falcons went into their second straight championship game with some unfinished business and they got all the fight they wanted from Gladbrook-Rein. The Falcons took the game 10-3 in what could be one of the best games and finishes in State Football history.

The Falcons was very dominant in the first half statistically, but just couldn't seem to get into the end zone. Gladbrook-Rein used a stout defense to pound the body of Brandon Fischer to keep the Falcons to just a field goal in the first half. The Falcons were not giving up a sniff on defense as they only allowed 53 yards in the first half.

The second half was much of the same. Both teams using a tough defense to keep the other salivating at the mouth to cross that goal line. As the third quarter ended the Falcons and Gladbrook-Rein were both feeling the effects of a defensive game and both teams loosened up and allowed, finally, some offense to get going. Glenbrook got inside the St Albert 30, but failed to convert on a fourth and one, the Falcons would have to punt it right back 4 plays later. After another stop on defense, the Falcons got an amazing punt return to get down to the 34 yard line. After two runs for only 3 yards, the Falcons called a timeout and set up what would be the game winning play! St Albert ran an option play and got Fisher to the outside and he turned on the jets to go 30+ yards for the touchdown!

After scoing the touchdown it seemed like the game was all but over, but Gladbrook-Rein had a different idea. They charged all the way down the field with a mixture of passing and some costly penalties by the Falcons. Inside the 30 once again, Gladbrook-Rein converted a tough fourth down conversion with 57 seconds left. With only 42 seconds remaining Gladbrook got to the 1 yard line with 3 downs left to score. Their first attempt was a QB sneak that was stuffed by the Falcon D. On their second attempt, the Falcons got some good luck from the football gods! A 5 yard motion penalty that put Gladbrook-Rein back to the 6 yard line. On third down with less than 18 seconds left, they threw a pass that once again got them down to the one yard line, but with no time outs they had to try and get their players up to the line of scrimmage. The clock was winding down 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 and they snapped it, but it was too late and the Falcons got their first ever state title!

St Albert, as you can tell, did an amazing job on the defensive side, holding Gladbrook-Rein to only 64 yard through the air. On offense, Brandon Fischer ran for 173 yards on a state record tying 33 carries, including the big touchdown run.
