Narmi Notes: Random Thoughts

Last time I wrote it was "Masters Week". This time it's "Derby Week". The Kentucky Derby that is, the best 2 minutes in sports. Now now, you don't have to like horse racing to enjoy this event. Disclaimer: Please see the archives to read my Masters top 3 before looking at my top 3 for the race... Judd Cochran told me a month ago at the Falcon No Limit Tourney he liked Sun King as a darkhorse. I'll take it! Sun King to win. Going Wild to place. And Bandini to show. The ladies run on Friday in the Kentucky Oaks. I like Sis City to win. Runway Model to place. And In the Gold to show. Check with Judd, Greg Johnson, or Marty Hughes if you want real expert analysis.

Speaking of the Falcon Texas No Limit Hold 'Em tournament - it was a great event put on by Mark Andrews down at his place. Entry fees bought yourself a $100,000 raffle ticket. Jerry Jares proved victorious at the big event by putting his banking skills on the line to win it all!

The St. Albert Alumni Association has enlisted Jay Gubbels to help put on a Sand Volleyball Tournament. The tournament is open to all St. Albert Alumni and will be held Saturday June 25th at the Railway Inn.

On June 16 St. Albert will officially name the baseball field after Chuck Wolever. This is a huge honor for the Wolever family and I hope you can make it. Chuck was the very first baseball coach at St. Albert and with the help of many Falcon friends, built the current baseball field. In addition to being the head baseball coach, Chuck's duties also included Activites Director, assistant football coach, and Dean of Boys. Mr. Wolever became the 1st St. Albert baseball coach to make it to state by knocking off perennial power T.J. (there were no classes). Chuck's son, Marti, was one of the top 2 or 3 athletes that St. Albert ever produced (he had Division 1 scholarship offers in football, basketball, and baseball). Marti is currently THEE head scout for the Philadelphia Phillies.

The spring sports are well underway and are actually entering their final month. Get out and support your St. Albert teams. Head to an event you've never been to and give it a shot. These kids work very hard but rarely get much fanfare (does wrestling ring a bell?).

Have I mentioned St. Albert doesn't have a Boys Tennis team?

Although, we do have a chess team and I like it! It's a great game to learn. Kids, take 30 minutes away from the playstation and learn to play. Parents, it's a life-long game you can enjoy with your kids. Who knows, maybe we won't have to search very far for the next Bobby Fischer. Let's just hope the real Bobby Fischer stays in Iceland.

While I'm thinking of brainiacs: Did you hear about Julie Mooney's group of students winning PhysicsQuest??? The group beat out over 200 schools to take the grand prize. Basically, the students had to work on some of Einstein's theories and submit their findings. The students won an all paid for trip to Princeton & the Institute of Advanced Studies where Einstein and John Nash (A Beautiful Mind) studied. This is the equivalent of winning a national academic championship! Mrs. Mooney's group includes: John Avey, Amanda Burkey, Zac Butcher, Danielle Cain, Michael Hoffman, Kelsey Mooney, Emily Oliver, Lacey Stogdill, & Morgan Wickersham. Heck, I got half way through Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" and I thought my head was going to spin off and to think these kids actually understand the stuff! As my old man has always said, "Brainiacs rule the world"!

Coach Kruzich (Head Track) and Adam Kuhl (Head Football) are both leaving St. Albert after the year is over. But you never really leave St. Albert now do you? Both these young men gave St. Albert state titles in their respective sports and more importantly were excellent role models to a lot of Falcons, so give them a kind word and congratulations if you see them around.

I know it's early, but I like my Cards to win it all this year. The Cardinals got to the big one last year and I think they'll get it done this fall. Think SA Basketball in 88 & 89, SA Baseball in 95 & 96, and SA Football in 03 & 04.

A little music flavor this time around... Dave Matthews Band comes out with a new CD on the 10th. Let's hope the boys can re-capture some of their old glory. If you're looking for something different, I have 2 great recommendations for you: Gaelic Storm - Special Reserve. It's fun Irish music. My other is Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Live Art. It won a grammy in 1996 for best jazz album and it's pretty funky. The best song I've heard in awhile is Renee Fleming's "The Water is Wide". It's beautiful, it's opera, & I'm not afraid to admit it.

In a real stretch I'll take the Heat over the Suns in the NBA finals, but does anybody really care? I'd rather see these guys on Cribs.

How 'bout those decorations at the Auction? Getty up!

Stay tuned for new articles, webcasts, polls, pictures, and video in the coming months. Make sure you tell a friend to give us a look.

A special note to the Seniors who will graduate on May 15th. Congratulations and good luck! I know it's cliche, but remember, it is not the end, merely the beginning. I'll give you one of my favorite quotes as you soon become a member of the St. Albert Alumni Family, "Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed... Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle... When the sun comes up, you'd better be running."

Until next time...
