Saintes 2nd @ CB Relays

Lewis Central captured eight events to successfully defend its title at the 2006 C.B. Relays Saturday afternoon on the L.C. track.

"This year was different ... you definitely have pressure," L.C. coach Ron Frascht said. "It took a lot of effort to defend the title with that kind of pressure."

The Titans took advantage of the splendid spring weather to score 131 1/2 points. St. Albert was second (107) with Abraham Lincoln finishing third, Thomas Jefferson fourth and Iowa School for the Deaf coming in fifth.

St. Albert and Thomas Jefferson each won four events on the day, while Abraham Lincoln captured three races.

"The city was loaded with a lot of talent this year," St. Albert coach Scott Milner said.

Sophomore Hilary Sadler, in her first meet of the season, earned four golds by defending her title in the 3,000 and adding the 800 and long jump titles. She ran the second leg in the winning 4x400 relay.

"That's just a credit to her," Frascht said of Sadler's first time out this season. "She's just such a tough competitor."

For Sadler, it was the first time she's actually got to try some of the events.

"It was the first time I've actually jumped," Sadler said of her winning attempt of 16-feet-0 3/4. "It's good to get back out (on the track)."

L.C.'s Megan Higgins defended both of her titles Saturday by winning the shot put and discus for a second year in a row.

"She's (competing) with a focus and confidence that's amazing," Frascht said.

L.C. also got an individual title from sophomore Mallory Husz in the 400, who was second in the event last year. L.C. went one-two-three in the event with Adriene Hitchcok, Tierra Wells finishing second and third. Husz anchored the 4x400, which also featured Hitchcock, Sadler and Wells.

The Titans also defended their title in the shuttle hurdle relay, with McKayla Christiansen and Connie Smith running on the team again. Sophomore Sydnie Dennis and freshman Lindsey Baker also ran on the race for L.C.

It wasn't all good news for L.C., however. Senior Rachel Terry, a three-time champion in the 100-meter dash, struggled through injury to finish fifth in her attempt for a fourth-straight title in the event.

"She wanted to come out and run (in the race)," Frascht said. "That just shows what a competitor she is."

The other big news was by Thomas Jefferson's Tiffanie Synacek, who cleared 5-feet-9 1/2 in the high jump, besting the meet record of 5-feet-6 by A.L. graduate Ashley Freeman (2001) and also eclipsing her own personal record.

Synacek added titles by running the distance medley and 4x200 with Jamie Swotek, CeCe Wright and Alyssa Hedrick in both races.

"She's just a phenomenal athlete," T.J. coach Pat Nepple said of Synacek.

Hedrick and Swotek teamed with Ashleigh Richardson and Stephanie Davids for the gold in the sprint medley.

St. Albert junior Beth Hamling won her third-straight 200-meter title, while freshman Trevour Yates won the 400 hurdles, an event the Saintes finished one-two-three.

Audrey Weidman added a gold in the 1,500, while the 4x800 team of Jennifer Liston, Krista Kennebeck, Ali Gorman and Natalie Andrews. Andrews, Gorman and Kennebeck all ran on the winning 4x800 relay team last year as well.

Abraham Lincoln, which didn't win any events last season, got a trio of victories on the track Saturday with freshman Stephanie Huntoon winning the 100 and Brittany Ridenour taking the 100 hurdles.

The Lynx, who were missing some people due to the one-day postponement, earned their other victory in the 4x100 with Huntoon turning in an impressive anchor leg to win the race at the wire. Ridenour, Laura Sales and Jessica Flom made up the first three legs of the relay.

"Top to bottom we had a real solid effort in a majority of the events," A.L. coach Don Schwartz said. "Overall I was pretty happy."

ISD finished with 16 points, more than doubling last year's total. The Bobcats finished fifth in three races, the distance medley, the 4x200, the sprint medley and the 4x100.

"There is a lot of great competition in the city this year," said Frascht, "and that's great to see."
