Vinnie's Rewmor Mill - Winter Blues

Why is my picture upside down? Ask me when you see me; the answer will not surprise you...

The end came much too soon. This year’s winter sports season on The Hill ended abnormally abruptly. Regretfully, the March Madness loyal Falcon and Sainte followers have become accustomed to was not in the cards this year. But let’s take a closer look and see why it’s not the worst thing in the world.

Do you hear that noise? That’s the sound of the Wrestling program turning the corner. Recently looked upon by their competition as an easy “W,” those days are done. The Falcons are now on the rise; not just in numbers but in quality. They are no doubt young, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Of course they will miss Seniors Patrick, T.J. and Cale. These guys have seen it all during their time in the Room. Their ability to set the right tone for workouts and meet prep will be sorely missed. But don’t miss them for too long. The future is bright with quality grapplers and hard workers. Credit Coach Driver, his staff and the wonderful wrestling parents and fans that are creating the right atmosphere for success. The wrestling community is unique for its tightness and support for all. It’s great to see that attitude permeating through the Falcon program right now.

The girls’ basketball team found themselves with only 2 wins to their credit. Were they really that bad? No way. I witnessed plenty of their games and the one thing that stood out most was that under no circumstances could you fault the effort of the girls. And that’s a credit to Coach Heithoff and his staff for instilling a sense of hard work that will pay forward. The silver lining is that this team was extremely youthful and has the potential to reverse their record in a big way down the road. Depending on how you look at it, good or bad, they will still be young next year. Unfortunately, they lost two quality seniors in Aileen and Gina that were not only the best players on the floor but also great leaders. But if more female athletes could see the benefits of playing winter ball and come together, the Saintes would undoubtedly be right back on top where they belong.

One of the biggest pressures a St. Albert athlete/team has is continuing the tradition of success that previous teams have paved before them. As fans and supporters, we have come to expect only the best when it comes to our teams. Tell me if I’m wrong. Simply making the playoffs in football is no longer the thrill it one was; now making The Dome is the standard. Earning a trip to a District Final or even a Sub-State game in hoops is not the big deal it once was; it’s a roadie to Des Moines that really gets our attention today. We have become victims of our own success. And I’m not even saying that having those feelings are necessarily a bad thing. The goal coming into each season should be to reach those lofty heights. But if the expectations are that high year in and year out, disappointment is inevitable (unless you’re Harlan I guess). Which brings us to the Boys Basketball season.

It did not finish where Coach Scott or any player on that team wanted it to finish. They felt they were talented enough to go further than they did. Unfortunately, it just didn’t happen. Forget about the record or any reasons that may accompany it; the only record that truly mattered to this group was their post-season record. And this season it wasn’t as glossy as in years past. No one is more disappointed about it than they are. They would still like to be playing, not just for themselves but for the entire SA community. March is a special time to still be playing high school hoops. They know the expectations of the Falcon Faithful and that winning just one or two tourney games isn’t enough. But this year it has to be because – as the sickening-popular saying goes – “it is what it is.” Yes, it stinks that they say goodbye to Seniors Quinn, Alan, Josh and Matt but they also return a hefty portion of their scoring, rebounding and minutes next year. And they will no doubt shoulder that same burden of expectations to the absolute best of their ability. That is something you can count on.

So, as we say adios to winter, I can only wonder what the spring has in store for our student athletes. What are their expectations? What will be the standard for success in their sport of choice? Guess I’ll have to write another column on that later…

Other Miscellaenous Thoughts:

-Went to the greatest Pizza place on earth last night; Pizza King. Every Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (and usually a couple of Fridays in between), I take Nance, the boys and my Mom to The King. Mom and I always split a large Anchovy and there's never any leftovers. The others order a boring Cheese pie. Thankfully Nick’s starting to feel those Italian juices flowing and is digging the ‘Chovy as well. My old man was a big Anchovy guy too; must run in the family.

-Whenever I go to Pizza King, I typically enjoy my meal in the darkness of the Bar. It’s just my style. And there never seems to be a shortage of folks I know sitting in there as well, usually with a St. Albert connection. But I’m also always impressed by the SA students that work there who, without fail, come out to say “Hi” to me and my family. I appreciate that. I appreciate the fact that they care enough just to ask how our meal was. So thanks, Chris P., Chris M., Chad B., Graham W. and all the others who may just want to get out of the kitchen for a minute or two but are polite enough to say “Hi” when they do.

My “You Gotta’ Hear” List:

-Do any of you ever try purchasing/downloading (if you’re into that sort of thing) the music I suggest? I want to know. If you have, send a note to the feedback or guestbook sections. Loved it or hated it, let me know. Got a disc we should know about? Send it to me and I'll try to make room for it. I’m a music freak and if I could make a living using my vast but useless music knowledge, I would.

-There are some incredible new releases coming out in the next week or three that are right up my alley. Maybe not yours, but would it kill you to give ‘em a try? Broaden your base, expand your mind a little...

On An Island     David Gilmour’s “On An Island

Legendary Pink Floyd-er unleashes his first solo album in 18 years. I have heard one track thus far (the title track) and it is CLASSIC Floyd. Like old Floyd that’s brand new. I know there are plenty of Pink Floyd fans reading this; you have got to get this one.

Morph the Cat     Donald Fagen’s “Morph The Cat”

I am a ravenous Steely Dan fan and this is only Fagen’s third solo release and his first in 13 years. The other two – Nightfly and Kamakiriad – were instant classics. The song “H Gang” is just like any other Steely Dan or Donald Fagen tune so if you like that vintage, this should be perfect.

Pay the Devil     Van Morrison’s “Pay The Devil”

Seems like the Belfast Cowboy releases at least two new albums every year. That may be a bit of a stretch but he never seems to slow down. I am a huge fan but this one is tilted strongly to the country side of things of which I rarely partake. Regardless, the initial reviews are excellent and I will no doubt add to my Van collection.

3121     Prince’s “3121”

I am an out-of-the-closet Prince fan. His musicianship and willingness to push the envelope make him still stand out in a world of copycat entertainers. True, he’s a bit of a freak but we all have character flaws. I have heard 4 of the tunes so far and like them all.

What I’m Listening to Right Now:

-There is some seriously great music out there that we all tend to miss. These are two that didn't slip by me.

The Way I Feel     Younger folks: Remy Shand’s “The Way I Feel”

Need a soothing moment in your hectic life? Drive to/from school listening to this one and only release from a talent that should be around for years. Grammy-nominated his first time out. It’s not easy listening; it’s got a very neo-soul feel about it.

The Best of Chris Rea     Non-Younger Folks: “Chris Rea’s Greatest Hits”

The Road To Hell, Fool If You Think It’s Over… Again, a guy with not a ton of commercial success but has a sound that’s all his own and a real talent for making a guitar sing.
