Tri-Center girls grab first-ever soccer win over Saintes

Kaylee Grote limped off the field sporting a skinned leg and painful back. She thinks her pinkie finger might be broken after someone cleated it.

But none of that was going to keep her from enjoying an overdue win against a longtime tormentor.

The Tri-Center senior converted a penalty kick in the second half, and the Class 1-A No. 12 Trojans dodged one threat after another to break through 1-0 against 1-A No. 8 St. Albert at the YMCA fields on Tuesday afternoon. It marks T-C’s first-ever win over the Saintes since it began offering soccer in 2005.

“I’ve never been part of a game where we’ve even been close to St. Albert,” Grote said. “Actually pulling it out is a pretty good feeling.”

Grote, one of six seniors on the team, has plenty of bad memories against St. Albert. She had gone 0-6 against the Saintes in her prep career, including three playoff exits. Tri-Center was outscored by...
