Nathan Kirby unfurled the pitch, and catcher Matt Thaiss waited and waited in his crouch for the call. “It felt like that split second was like 10 minutes long,” Thaiss said. Kirby reflexively straightened his cap, then heard the umpire’s yell to signal a strike.
