RAGBRAI Day 1 Update: Hull to Spirit Lake

Posted: 07/20/2014 - by Charlie Narmi

Sioux County, Iowa, a colony of the Netherlands, consistently has some of the smoothest roads around.   It was true again today, as was the saying, "If you ain't Dutch, you ain't much".   Actually we were treated nicely by the folks in Sheldon.

An Okoboji family favorite of ours.

The town of Melvin, in Osceola County, was a nice stop. Clean porta-potties. Hey, it's important.  Tiny May City (never heard of it, which is sorta rare for me) was geared up to handle the throng. The sweet corn & watermelon were tremendous.

In the Okoboji area we went to the Barefoot and Bucks. I report, you infer. Our gracious hosts, Jed & Eileen Skogerboe, met us in town then we followed them to their nice home with hot showers, though luke-cool water felt better.

Fashion tip. Never wear your helmet inside. It's just dorky.

Folks behaved themselves on the route, but a fierce crosswind made us exert more effort. No headwinds at least. We did ride for a time with recent SA grads Joe Biller and Jake Bendgen--a pleasant surprise.

Tomorrow we ride to Emmetsburg. We'll make no mention of Falcons v. E'Hawks. It's a great little town with a Catholic grade school even.

Hunk a hunk of burning love
