LINCOLN - Mike Stuntz will play his final Nebraska football season on defense, moving from quarterback to safety when the Huskers start spring practice on March 23.

Stuntz and former I-back Tierre Green will join a Nebraska secondary that was stripped of three starters in the offseason.

"He was very accepting of the change," NU Coach Bill Callahan said. "I think the world of Mike Stuntz. He's a guy who's very sharp and very instinctive, very quick, and a bright mind for football. He's a player who has the potential to really help us in the back end."

Callahan went over a handful of changes Wednesday, on the heels of the Husker staff completing its offseason evaluation period. Also of note, he called tight end Matt Herian "very doubtful" for spring practice and said Seppo Evwaraye would be moving from right offensive tackle to left tackle.

Stuntz hasn't taken a snap at quarterback since the 2002 season. The fifth-year senior from Council Bluffs St. Albert redshirted in 2003 and then made only a few appearances on kickoff coverage last year.

Nebraska lost Josh Bullocks at free safety but returns Daniel Bullocks at strong safety. Their backups last season, Andrew Shanle and Shane Siegel, both return.

"I wouldn't do this if I didn't have the confidence in Mike to adapt as quickly as he can," Callahan said. "If you're a player and you understand the game, conversions are not difficult."
