Vinnie's Rewmor Mill - Track Districts

The Girls and Boys Track teams had many outstanding District performances last Saturday at Corning, sending a combined 14 events to the State Track meet in Des Moines this weekend.

Coach Milner's girls squad was dominating in sending 10 different events to State, including every relay but the Shuttle Hurdle. They finished 2nd overall behind host Corning but most impressive had to be the Sprint Medley Relay (Kristin McGlade, Ashley Petersen, Beth Hamling and Gina Assmann) as they retained their standing of #1 in the State. The Distance Medley, 4x1, 4x2, 4x4 and 4x8 all also qualified. Individually, Assman won the open 100, Lauren Doll finished a surprising 2nd in the 400 hurdles. Justine Olsen in the open 400 and Audrey Wiedman in the 1500 also earned at large spots based on their timed performances.

The big question is: How many points can these gals reel off in Des Moines? If they stay focused on what they're there for, run to their ability and hit each handoff, a Top 5 standing in the team totals is not unrealistic. Get in the Top 5 and anything can happen. I can't wait to watch 'em...

The Boy's squad was lead by Brandon Fischer as he won the open 800, finished second in the 400 and anchored the runner-up 4x8. Freshman Marc Baumert soared an all-time best 6'1 in the High Jump to unexpectedly qualify in that event. Talk about nice surprises...

Baumert's 4th place in the High Hurdles just missed out as did Daniel Fischer in the 3200, and the 4x4 relay. Other Top 6 finishers included Jeremy Schieffer in the 100 (an 11.19 puts him in the All-Time Top 10 at SA), Tony Knotek in the Long Jump, Cale Yates in the Discus, Baumert in the 400 hurdles, the 4x1, 4x2 and Medley relays.

In a 20 team District, the Falcons finished a very tough 3rd behind defending State Champ Treynor and hoping-to-be-champ Griswold. There was not one event out of the17 that the Falcons did not finish 9th or better in. That is a pretty impressive statistic in itself.

Here's wishing both squads lots of luck and good weather this week in Des Moines. The first ever combined State Track and Field meet at Drake Stadium will surely be one to remember.
