Saintes Lose Tight One to Underwood in 5

UNDERWOOD - Underwood stared defeat square in the face Monday night, then responded to capture a hard-fought five-game volleyball victory over St. Albert Monday night.

The Eagles took the first game (25-16) before seeing St. Albert rally at the end of games two and three for 25-23 wins in each of them. The Eagles responded with a 25-22 win in game two and went on a big run at the end of game five to win 15-13.

St. Albert quickly got to 12 points in the final game.

"We told them 'you're a better team that,'" Underwood coach Heath Telleen said. "We weren't going to lay down and quit."

The Eagles responded from the 12-8 deficit and pulled out the decision in the hot Underwood gymnasium.

"We just couldn't finish it off," St. Albert coach Angie Lantz said. "We need to start finishing the game better."

While the heat was a factor, Lantz said she wouldn't use it as an excuse.

"I thought both teams played a little sluggish," Lantz said. "Who would have thought it would be 90 degrees in October?"

Devon Jensen battled through a sore shoulder for 14 kills, mostly tipping the ball, on 49 attacks.

"She just sees the floor really well," Telleen said.

Chelsea Bracker added seven kills, while freshman Carlie Mander added six kills and was 15-for-16 hitting.

Anne Hasenkamp added 20 kills, while freshman Brooke Darrington led the team with a dozen digs and Carly Lintner have five aces.

Becca Gradoville had 11 kills to go with 11 digs, while Krista Kennebeck added 10 kills and 16 digs for the Saintes, who rallied from big deficits of their own in games two and three.

"Becca played a great game," Lantz said. "Krista worked hard and brought up a lot of stuff."

Morgan Wickersham added seven kills and five blocks, while Taylor Russell also had seven kills and two blocks. Natalie Andrews had 23 assists and Lauren Kennebeck added 11.

"Both of our setters worked their butts off," Lantz said.

The Eagles return to action tonight against Riverside, where a win will give the Eagles the No. 4 seed and a home match for the first round of the Western Iowa Conference Tournament.

The Saintes return to action tonight at Fremont, Neb., Bergan. The two teams will square off again Saturday in the opening match of the Centennial Conference Tournament in Grand Island, Neb.
