Falcons get big Homecoming win

Two wobbly passes changed the entire course of St. Albert's 33-7 win over Griswold on homecoming night at Al Leber Field.

Chad Belt caught both of them.

"Chad made the plays to turn the game around," said Falcon coach Jim Duggan. "He was in the right place at the right time."

The first was from, of all people, Jake Hoffa after a botched snap on a field goal attempt with the Falcons trailing by one in the third quarter.

Hoffa rolled to his left and chucked up a desperation pass in between three Tiger defenders, but Belt out-leaped everyone to give the Falcons a 14-7 lead.

"That pass could have gone anywhere," said Duggan. "Give Hoffa credit. He got the ball where it needed to be."

The very next pass of the game was by Griswold quarterback James Nichols and it floated hopelessly awry into the waiting arms of Belt at the Tiger 20, who then returned to the seven.

Doug Moran went over from seven yards out on the very next play for a 21-7 lead and the Falcons never looked back.

The Tigers took a lead into halftime (7-6), after dominating in yardage and time of possession for the first two quarters.

"We challenged the players at halftime," said Duggan. "They responded, it is as simple as that."

Nichols hooked up with Logan Weirich to cap an 80-yard drive to open the game, and the Tigers made it look easy.

Jeremy Schieffer broke around right-end on an option play and scored from 45 yards out on the Falcons first possession.

A bad Falcon snap on the conversion try left the score at 7-6.

Griswold responded with a 75-yard drive on an incredible 24 plays, but the Falcons came up with a huge goal line tackle on fourth down to preserve the score.

"That was big at the time," said Duggan. "We had no idea the second half would go the way it did."

The Tigers turned the ball over six times in the second half.

"We were knocking the ball loose," said Duggan. "We forced them to turn the ball over."

Batten wrapped up the night with 49 yards passing and a rushing touchdown, and Doug Moran added two touchdowns of his own in the second half.

Schieffer capped the night with an 85-yard touchdown run in the closing moments of the game to finish with 147 yards on 15 carries.

Belt was involved in 25 tackles, forced two fumbles and made the game's critical interception.

The Flacons travel to Audubon next week.

"Long road trip and a tough team to play," said Duggan. "If we play like we did in the second half tonight, I like our chances."
