O'Malley to see work at WR for UNO

UNO coach Pat Behrns said Zach Miller would start at quarterback Saturday when the Mavericks open their football season with a 6 p.m. home game against the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

"That's after looking at the whole camp," Behrns said. "We aren't doing some things we need to do on offense, but I can't blame it on the quarterback. Our other quarterback will play, but we haven't figured out a rotation yet."

Behrns opened fall camp by saying he expected Miller and redshirt freshman Greg Wunderlich to play regularly. Miller, a junior, often played a series in each half of games last season as the backup to four-year starter Brian Masek.

Miller completed 3 of 11 passes and threw three interceptions in Saturday's final major scrimmage

"It was a bad night, but it's over with," Miller said. "I didn't let it bother me. I've just got to have a short memory."

Behrns said his quarterback assured him that he was still confident in himself, as he was in a backup role last season.

"That's important for me, and for us, to have confidence in him," Behrns said.

The quarterbacks have been operating behind a patchwork offensive line. True freshman Nate Wissink will start at right tackle after coming into camp as a candidate to redshirt as a defensive tackle. Jake Krause, a backup tight end a week ago, is set to start at center.

Wide receiver has been hit hard, too. Troy Kush and David Carey are set to start following injuries to transfers Mike Bolio and Casey Hausman.

Behrns also said Monday that senior transfer Andrew McCawley will be the kicker and that true freshmen Greg Zuerlein and Clayton Wennekamp would redshirt. True freshman safety John O'Malley of Council Bluffs St. Albert, will get a look at wide receiver this week.

While projected No. 1 center Aaron Bierman was expected to have his ankle re-examined Monday, all-conference tackle Ben Hochstein was expected to get some repetitions this week.

Starting middle linebacker Antwain Woods strained a knee ligament in addition to injuring an ankle in Saturday's scrimmage and wasn't expected to practice Monday.
