Assman, Finn Star in E/W All-Star Game

WAUKEE - It was the East/West soccer all-star game, yet southwest Iowa represented itself well in a 3-1 West win Saturday.

"We had a lot of talent on our team and that made our jobs pretty easy," said winning co-coach Mark Royer (Thomas Jefferson), who shared managing duties with crosstown coach Randy Salyers (St. Albert). "It was nice to see players from our area play such an important role."

Gina Assmann scored twice in the second half, including the game-winner only 19 seconds into the second half.

"She took a nice pass right after the restart," said Salyers. "There was a 45 minute delay for a thunderstorm before the second half could start."

The delay didn't faze Assmann who scored a second goal later in the half and earned Most Valuable Player honors for the game.

Thomas Jefferson goalkeeper Jenny Shadden was second from the shutout, but gave way on a penalty kick less then a minute from the final whistle.

"She got a hand on it," said Royer. "It's a tough way to lose a shutout, but she still gets the win."

Also representing Council Bluffs were Marissa Finn (St. Albert), McKayla Christensen (Lewis Central) and Jenny King (T.J.).

East 0 1 - 1

West 1 2 - 3
