MadStatters' 2016 RAGBRAI Day 3 ReportPosted: 07/27/2016 - by Charlie NarmiCreston to Leon. Just about as many hills, but not as many miles as Monday. Mileage checked in at near 60 instead of 80. Towns offering hospitality on the route included Diagonal, Mt. Ayr, Kellerton, and Decatur City. We crossed the prime meridian of Iowa, I-35. RAGBRAI vets know it as the unofficial halfway point.
Leon, IA. Pachyderm of unknown origin has been guarding the DQ for 35 years, so a local explained.
A Ding Dong in Diagonal thought he needed to lock his lower run-of-the-mill bike. Was all The MadStatter could do to resist explaining the futility of his obsession.
As we trek across the southernmost tier of counties much less ground is cultivated. In stark contrast to the uninterrupted sight lines in north central & NW Iowa this land rises, falls and turns continuously. So we see a lot of prairie grass and fewer acres of row crop. Consequently the towns appear less prosperous and populous--though no less friendly.
A farmstead for today. To quote Jackson Browne in 'Running on Empty', "Rural scenes & magazines..." Go Go Goats are tethered.
We stopped along the way to see pigs and goats on display. Some were proudly headed to the Iowa State Fair, representing Decatur County.
District Judge Kathleen Kilnoski with retired Decatur County Magistrate Delbert Lee. The wheels of justice turn on...
Had a terrific chance meeting with business owner in Leon. 84 year old Delbert Lee formerly served as a Decatur County Magistrate. He and Fighting Black Squirrel charter member Kathleen Kilnoski were able to have a sidebar about all things legal. Magistrate Lee now owns the Korthouse Lounge. Go figure.
At the Korthouse in Leon - Won't even try to decipher the meaning...
So the MadStatter, Kathleen, Kevin & Joe have completed our planned ride. Fellow FBS-er's, the Schreiber clan, roll on.
Among countless other words in the English language, The Fighting Black Squirrels don't know the meaning of 'sag'.
The boys enjoying their furlough.
We didn't need the sag wagon, and it was good to be out of our Kansas jail cells without causing any Mass Casualty Incidents.
Next report in 2017 (we hope). Reporting for stalbertsportsfan.com ~Matt Madsen~ -ARCHIVES- |
