Saintes take 2nd at Districts

TREYNOR - The host Treynor girls were so focused on qualifying as many entrants as they could for the state meet, they never stopped to realize they were on their way to winning the Class 1A district meet held on the Treynor track Saturday.

The Cardinals captured the team title with a score of 123, edging St. Albert by eight points. Riverside was third with 106 points.

"My girls didn't even think about it. They looked a little surprised when they heard they won," Cardinal coach Gail Hartigan said. "Winning the district title is pretty meaningless, it's about getting as many as you can to state."

That number is at least five for the Cardinals, as they placed first in five events Saturday.

Event winners from each district automatically qualify for state, and the next best 12 times or distances from the around the state make up the rest of the field. Cut-off times were not available as of press time Saturday.

Lindsey Schuler won the discus for Treynor's only individual win of the meet. The other first-place finishes came in the 1,600 medley, 4x200, sprint medley and 4x400 relays.

"I thought for the most part the girls competed well today," Hartigan said. "We were hoping that those five could get in, and then we had a couple of second (places) that you hope performed well enough (to make the cut), but there's now way of knowing right now."

St. Albert advanced to the blue oval at Drake Stadium for the state meet in six events Saturday, including Beth Hamling sweeping the short sprints by winning the 100 and 200 by comfortable margins.

"Beth just continues to run well for us," St. Albert co-coach Bob Weidman said. "She has been all season long."

Abby Schlater, one of two freshmen to qualify for the Saintes, won the 3,000, while sophomore Audrey Weidman took first in the 200 and Lauren Doll took the gold in the 400 hurdles.

The St. Albert 4x800 relay unit of Natalie Andrews, Trevour Yates, Audrey Weidman and Krista Kennebeck placed first as well.

"I thought if the girls ran to their potential, we'd have a pretty good chance in those events," Weidman said. "It's a tough meet - Treynor's always tough - but the girls ran well."

Riverside took first in five events on its way to third, including Stephanie Bentley in the long jump, Caitlin Wilson in the high jump and Lauren Anderson in the 100 hurdles. The Lady Bulldogs also placed first in the shuttle hurdle and 4x100.

Underwood's Heather Minssen continued her comeback from an injury during basketball season by winning the shot put with a heave of 38-feet-10.

The day's other event winner was Alex Moyer of Sidney, who placed first in the 400.
