Vinnie's Top 10 Local Things To Do

Are you one of those folks that can never seem to find just the right thing to do on the weekend? You know you want to do something – anything – but can’t put your finger on just what will be a fun night out? Well your trepidation can take a 10-week vacation, because I have compiled a list of  Vinnie’s Top 10 most enjoyable things you can do in the metro area (in no particular order). From the “you knew that already” to the “huh?” these places will broaden your proverbial horizons and make for a memorable evening. So what if they’re actually my favorite things; at least you’ll get a few fresh ideas.

1. Joslyn Art Museum / Jazz on the Green: We totally take for granted how lucky we are in this smaller metro area to have a quality museum like Joslyn. You don't have to be a geek to appreciate art. Much of it's beautiful in its simplest form. And if you're into live music in a very casual atmosphere, check out the long-running Jazz on the Green series during each summer outside Joslyn. Great acts, great atmosphere, great price (free)!

2. Rosenblatt Stadium: Of course we all know what a terrific party the College World Series is, but how 'bout just catching a game during a perfect summer evening? No crowds, parking's a breeze and the game is more than an adequate backdrop for a relaxing night out.

3. The Dog Track: OK, I know I'll take some heat on this one as it's not exactly for everyone (age and taste included). But I have never had a bad time at the track. Sure there's some different cats walking around there, but if you take a seat in the clubhouse, order something to snack on, gamble only what you can afford to lose and enjoy "something completely different," then the Dog Races might be just what you're looking for.

4. The Holland Performing Arts Center: Have you been there? I've been there for 3 concerts so far. It is extremely cool. Very modern, very Euroean-shiek, and very un-Metro-like. When you walk into the actual concert hall, you could just as easily be in Stockholm or Prague. At any rate, it's a great venue to catch live tunes. Just be cautious exiting down the staircase, as last concert Nancy and I went to, I helped tend to 3 elderly folks who all took substantial tumbles within the span of one minute. No lie. It was like triage on M.A.S.H.

5. Taste of Omaha: Located every summer (June usually) at Heartland of America Park on the Con-Agra campus, Taste of Omaha is an awesome way to sample the best restaurants this area has to offer. The sights, the smells... it's another wonderful atmosphere to mingle with other food-revelers and to experience a slice of the Metro. And when you're done gorging yourself, how about taking a walk on the new Riverfront? It's another new spot in town that doesn't feel like our typical home. Take advantage while you can.

6. St. Lucia Festival: I love festivals. Good food, good drink, good party... St. Lucia is one of the best. Being Italian, I guess that makes sense. They march the St. Lucia statue down the parade route, the music is classic, and there are Italian goodies at every turn. Stuff you never order when you go out to eat. It's one giant Italian party, and who doesn't love partying with a Dego?

7. The Orpheum Theatre: So what if this my 3rd place listed where you can hear live music? It's the best. A classic beauty on every level. Sound, design, decoration... The Orpheum is spectacular. And there is always a wide variety of shows to see there; not just the Symphony. Take a gander at the schedule and pick one; you won't be disappointed.

8. Fremont Dinner Train: All right, I admit I've never been on it. But it seems so cool. And I've heard good things about it. Just the thought of dinner on a moving train seems to conjour up romatic images of yesteryear. It's on my list. I'll let you know.

9. Mt. Crescent So what if it's not Breckenridge? We live in the Plains. And if you enjoy winter activities you'll take what the good Lord gives you. He has given you the infamous Mt. Crescent. It's always fun out there and the price is rightt.

10. Top of Harrah's at nightime: I don't even know the name of it (I think it's 360 but I'm not sure) but what a view! You probably have to be 21 to get up there at night, but if you are you'll love it. Yes the drinks are too expensive and the Karaoke the past couple times Nance and I went up there can get annoying, but the VIEW! Omaha has never looked better.

There you have it, just a few things to spice up your dayor night out. There were plenty of others to choose from: I enjoy the IMAX at the Zoo, watching ANY Hockey game, visitng the Qwest for different events, hanging out the Hilton across from the Qwest... the list could be much longer.

But for now, this will do. Give one or two all 10 a try. At any rate, try something new. Broaden your horizons. Be adventurous. You only get one shot at it all - even if you hate it at least you'll know next time!
