Titans nip St. Albert in shootout

Regulation time, overtime and eight shootout attempts failed to produce a result at Titan field Friday night.

Evan Summy scored the game winner for Lewis Central on the ninth penalty kick attempt, giving the Titans the 2-1 win.

"Evan played a great game on defense and stepped up in the shootout under pressure," said Titan coach Sid Leytham. "All credit to Riley (Landolt) in goal, we wouldn't have been in overtime without him."

Landolt made several remarkable saves, including a one-hander in the shootout that left both benches astonished.

"Their keeper played a great game," said Falcon coach Tom Lorkovic. "Other than that I think we outplayed them."

Leytham didn't argue with the statement.

"They took more shots and beat us to most of the free balls," said Leytham. "Give them credit, but give us the win."

The Titans avenged last year's loss to the Falcons that saw a two-goal L.C. lead vanish in the last 20 minutes of the game in the Falcons 3-2 win.

"We wanted this one pretty bad," said Leytham. "We haven't beaten them in a while."

L.C. struck first again this year after a scoreless first half.

The Titans strung several passes together up the right side with Pablo Navarette getting the final touch after a perfect pass from Dan Fischer.

St. Albert replied 25 minutes later after relentless pressure when a Quinn Walsh corner kick found Jake Brown alone at the back post for a tap in.

In the meantime, more than 25 fouls were called, both coaches given yellow cards as well as Falcon striker Chad Pierce who then had to sit out the rest of the game.

"That hurt our attack," said Lorkovic. "The yellow card wasn't unwarrented, but it also wasn't the worst foul of the half."

The calls didn't favor either team.

"He was consistant because he called absolutely everything," said Leytham. "Sometimes you have to just let them play."

Overtime ended 1-1 and the shootout was tied 3-3 after five and 5-5 after eight shooters.

Summy placed the ball in the right corner of the net after a Falcon miss and the Titan celebration erupted.

"We aren't going to hang our head at all," said Lorkovic. "I am happy with the way we played."

The Titans draw first blood in this years city competition.

"Bottom line is that we played a city game and we won," said Leytham. "Shootouts are a terrible way to end the game, but it looks the same as any other win on our record."
