St. Albert produces an overtime triumph

St. Albert treated its home crowd to an overtime thriller Thursday night, needing an extra frame to top Elkhorn (Neb.) Mount Michael 55-48 in a non-conference boys basketball game Thursday.

"It was a great atmosphere tonight, and we really played well," St. Albert coach Dale Scott said. "We were diving after loose balls and really getting after it. We played with good intensity."

The Falcons were dealt a bad hand early in the contest when starting point guard C.J. Gradoville went down with an injury in the first quarter, but freshman Matt Waters stepped in and did a commendable job in his place.

Waters, who joined the varsity ranks just over a month ago, finished with a game-high 16 points to go with five steals, five rebounds and two assists. He played a key role down the stretch, getting a steal and a lay-up and going three-for-four from the free throw line in overtime.

"It's pretty rare for a freshman to be able to step in and contribute like that," Scott said. "But he really stepped up at the point for us ... he had a great night."

Nolan Batten got the job done on the glass for the Falcons, pulling down 14 rebounds. Quinn Walsh scored 12 points and Marc Baumert finished with nine - all in the second half - to go with six rebounds and three assists.

Baumert hit both of his free throws in the extra frame, making St. Albert 5-for-6 overall from the stripe in overtime.

The Falcons hit 15 of their 20 free throws on the night, while Mount Michael finished 6-for-20.

"Overall we just got great contributions from everyone tonight. Everybody that came in the game gave a great effort," Scott said. "In a game like this we were facing some serious adversity with our starting point guard out, but we were able to overcome that."

The Falcons take an eight-day break before hosting Nebraska Class C1 No. 3 rated Boys Town next Friday.
