Fremont Bergan sidetracks Saintes

St. Albert didn't get the homecoming it was looking for Tuesday night.

Fremont Bergan broke away in the third quarter, then sealed the win by making nine foul shots in the final two minutes of the game to defeat St. Albert 52-43 in prep girls basketball Tuesday evening at St. Albert.

It was the first home game for the Saintes since Dec. 15.

The contest proved another case of the Saintes playing a good team well, but . . .

"We played excellent defense," said St. Albert coach Tom Heithoff. "We finally reached a point at the end of the game where we had to foul and send them to the line. Otherwise, we hold them under 50 points. You do that to a team and you have a chance to win.

"We had a bad stretch in the third quarter. That has done us in before. We would play good games, but have one bad stretch. This was, for the most part, a six-point game.

"Fremont Bergan is a good team. They were second in the (Centennial) conference tournament last week."

Senior Gina Assmann, despite being limited by some foul trouble, and sophomore Lauren Doll led the Saintes with 11 points each.

Lauren Hamilton, a 5-foot-2 senior, led Bergan with 11 points.
