Saintes can't find offense

WAHOO, Neb. - Wahoo Neumann used a 22-8 run in the second quarter to break the game open as it toppled St. Albert 46-27 in girls prep basketball action Monday night.

The Cavaliers led by just four after the first quarter, but took an 18-point lead into halftime thanks to the second-quarter flurry.

"They physically kind of took it to us in the second quarter," St. Albert coach Tom Heithoff said. "They have some long-armed girls and good athletes, and we didn't adjust very well to them ... we were kind of freaked out by their press."

The Saintes switched defenses in the second half and held Neumann to just eight points in both the third and fourth quarters, but they couldn't capitalize.

St. Albert surprised the Cavaliers with a triangle-and-two and held them scoreless for nearly six minutes to start the third quarter.

"We had their offense confused, but the problem was that we couldn't take advantage of it," Heithoff said. "We missed a lot of point-blank shots, and that's been a lot of our problem the last two games.

"It's not that we're not getting shots, it's just that we're not finishing."

Gina Assmann led the Saintes with 14 points to go with four steals, and Aileen Mooney added nine points and eight rebounds.

St. Albert plays at crosstown rival Lewis Central Thursday in the first half of a girl/boy varsity doubleheader. The Saintes take a 1-10 record into the contest.

"It would be frustrating if there wasn't a tremendous amount of effort, but the girls really are working hard," Heithoff said. "We're extremely proud of these kids, we've just got some things to work on and keep improving."

The girls will be back in action Thursday at cross-town rival Lewis Central in a boy/girl double-header.
