Griswold - St. Albert full of playoff implications

Posted: 10/20/2005 - by

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Class 1A District 1 playoff race is a huge mess.
Four teams Logan-Magnolia, Griswold, St. Albert and Underwood stand at 4-1 in the district and only two of them can make the postseason.
Griswold heads to Al Leber Field for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday night and Underwood takes on Logan-Magnolia next weekend so if any of the four teams can win out, they will can ensure themselves a spot in the postseason.

Everybody is in a do-or-die situation, St. Albert coach Jim Duggan said. If you win youre still alive.

While there is still plenty to sort through, Duggan said his team has done a good job of focusing at the task at hand this week.
Really we havent spent a lot of time dwelling on (the playoffs), He said. We play Griswold Friday and that is all that matters this week.
Were just going one-game-at-a-time that has been our motto for the last six weeks.

Griswold had the inside track at the district title until Underwood scored a 25-6 win over the Tigers last weekend.
The Tigers are led by running Lucas Mosier, who has already gained 1,123 yards on 163 carries this season.
Mosier is one of the top 1A running backs in the state, Duggan said. Hes a great back and he has a lot of great people around him.
Brad Perdue is second on the squad with nearly 400 yards rushing with 42 carries - 9.2 per attempt. Both Perdue and Mosier were members of the state champion 4x100 relay last spring.

The Falcons meanwhile enter with a two-game winning streak, including last weeks 28-0 win over Tri-Center. It was the second shutout of the season for Falcons, who also blanked West Monona.
Nolan Batten scored the games first touchdown on a two-yard run, while Jeremy Schieffer added a touchdown on a 47-yard punt return before the half. John OMalley had two second-half scores for the Falcons.

We still made some mistakes last week, Duggan said. I cant really put my thumb on anything were doing really good, or anything were doing bad. Id say the kids have been consistent in all three phases of the game. Were getting a little more confident special teams-wise and that could be the difference Friday night..

Between The Lines
Who: St. Albert (4-1, 4-3) vs. Griswold (4-1, 5-2).
Where: Al Leber Field.
When: Friday at 7:30 p.m.
What to watch for: With two weeks left in the regular season, there is a four-way tie atop Class 1A District 1. The tie includes Griswold, St. Albert, Underwood and Logan-Magnolia.
This week's winner will have a big step ahead of the pack for postseason positioning.
Griswold - who is led by Lucas Mosier's 1,123 yards rushing - is looking to rebound from last week's 25-6 loss to Underwood.
St. Albert had perhaps its most complete game of the season last week, shutting out Tri-Center 28--0, despite missing some players.
The Falcons, who are back at full-strength this week, not only pitched a shutout on defense but also got a touchdown on special teams and controled the ball on offense.
