Falcons travel to West Monona...

Fresh off its first victory of the season, St. Albert (1-0, 1-2), travels to Onawa to take on West Monona Friday night for a 7:30 p.m Class 1A District 1 football game.
The Falcons, who opened the district action by topping Underwood last week, will take on the winless Spartans (0-1, 0-3).

West Monona has struggled through the first three weeks and has been outscored a combined 156-7. Last week the Spartans was on the wrong side of a 67-0 decision at the hands of Griswold.

Still, St. Albert knows it can't take the Spartans lightly.

"We're not in the position to be able to do that," St. Albert coach Jim Duggan said. "We're still pretty young and inexperienced.

"We're not going to underestimate anybody."

The Falcons are riding high after opening Class 1A District 1 action last Friday with a win over Underwood, a state quarterfinalist last season.

"It was a real emotional game for the coaches and the players," Duggan said. "It was probably more emotional because we were 0-2, we needed something positive to hang our hat on.

"It was a huge confidence builder for a lot of young kids, it was just a big win for us."

The Falcons did it with defense last week, holding the high-powered Eagle offense to just three points.

Leading the defensive effort has been the effort of Chad Belt and John O'Malley.

"Belt has never missed a weight room workout. He has a great attitude and a great work ethic. I think some of his enthusiasm spills over to the other kids," Duggan said. "O'Malley and Chad kind of feed off of each other. John is an emotional kid too and those two have spearheaded our defense the last three weeks."

During its title run in 2004, the St. Albert offensive line helped blaze a path each week, but the Falcons returned no starters up front when the season began.

However, Duggan said the group consisting of center Chris McKenzie, guards Zac Butcher and Cale Yates, tackles Kevin Awalt and Patrick Fetter and tight end Andrew Wise has becomea solid group.

"They're getting better each week and that was our goal from game one," Duggan said.
