MadStatter's 2018 RAGBRAI Day 4: Thursday

Posted: 07/27/2018 - by Charlie Narmi

Kathleen, Larry, Paul and Matt started off the day in the right way. After we left the Hoebelheinrich household at 6:30 AM, we stopped at the local Hy-Vee for a breakfast buffet. Eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy and oatmeal are good fuel. Pancakes too.

2018 RAGBRAI beautiful Iowa

Sully, IA was a pretty little town we toured although the next town of Lynville zipped by in a hurry.

The shining star town of the day was Montezuma. There we found a nice watering hole complete with an X-Files pinball machine and some good food and shade on the town Square.  The entertainment was terrific. We saw and heard The Tubador (tubador.com)—a man playing a tuba and a tambourine at the same time. We also enjoyed the Montezuma Braves high school pep band.  They rocked some early Elvis Presley numbers for adoring patrons on the courthouse lawn.

Montezuma.  Falcons clipped them in 2006 football Championship.  Great meeting town.

Tuba & tambourine: a surprisingly satisfying combination.

2018 RAGBRAI Montezuma High School Band

Montezuma HS Band was awesome - played snappy Elvis numbers. Fun!

Keswick was a fun stop. The good people of this Keokuk County town were well prepared.  Speaking of Keokuk County, The Madstatter has a bone to pick with the folks who posted the sign saying that it was established in 1843.  That’s impossible because Iowa did not become a state until 1846.  No state, no county. Just saying....

The cycling on Thursday was incredible!  Our 63 miles went by in a flash. The hills were rolling & the wind assisted us up those hills. It was a top five day in terms of temperature, wind and general enjoyment.

The intrepid Larry Carlson has one more day of riding, but the others of us went on home, courtesy of our driver extraordinaire Matt Stinn.
