What A Week!

What a week to be a part of the St. Albert Community!

Scott Wright said it best in a tweet, "Nothing beats being at a place where one can thrive as a multi-sport athlete, grow academically, and be surrounded by great staff and families!"

On Tuesday, January 29th, Henry Powell started his day off with 7 strikes, finishing with a season high 267. I could bowl 100 times and might not reach 267 if you combined two of my best scores, amazing job Henry!

Friday night featured one of those special nights On the Hill that despite the great quality of our live game broadcasts on YouTube, you had to be at The Palace to truly appreciate. And I think most of you were there as the Falcon basketball team took on Class 4A Lewis Central, a school that beat St. Albert 61-26 on Groundhog Day 2018.

This game didn't feature Bill Murray waking up to Sonny & Cher over and over again, but it was every bit as entertaining and then some. A tight contest throughout featured second half golf clapping by the non-student section part of the Titans' crowd, as the wiser fans nervously applauded their team's small lead throughout most of the game.

An 11-0 Titan's run to end the third quarter broke a 36-36 tie and all but sealed the Falcon's fate. "It's going to go one way or the other, we're going to go down by 25 or we're just going to continue that grind and just keep doing what we do and who we are and we did. They just kept digging and digging, pushing the ball, chasing down loose balls and you hit big shots and it works a lot better when the balls going in," - Coach Larry Peterson.

You can see the ending in our YouTube video here https://youtu.be/wLWybZhxrk8 , I won’t spoil the ending.

I would add to Scott’s tweet, “multi-activity student,” as Saturday featured Lego Leaguers, Robotics engineers & Improv actors all proudly representing St. Albert. Starting in South Sioux City, the High School robotics team won 2nd place in the ‘Think’ award, 2nd place in the ‘Design’ award and 9th in the Robot games, but most importantly, qualified for the State competition in Coralville, IA on February 22nd-23rd! Congratulations to coaches Andrea Barnes, Dawn Tarbox and Lynn Gardner and all of the Thunderstruck team members.

Southeast on the map in West Des Moines, the group improv team of Ainsley Wolford, Grace Garrigan and Noah Ruckman scored repeat straight 1s in their competition.

And last but definitely not least (full disclosure, my daughter is on the Orbots team), all three St. Albert First Lego League teams qualified for the state competition in their qualifier at Lewis & Clark Elementary in Bellevue.

A bevy of hardware was taken home by our teams, the Orbots, Celestial Cyborgs and Space Invaders. Congratulations to Orbots coaches Brian Bohnet and Julie Horvath, Cyborgs coaches Michelle Oswald and Mikala Holtz and Invaders coaches Brent Schaeffer and Mike Jensen on a great season, and of course to all of the team members.

Be sure to check out our YouTube channel, website photo gallery, Twitter and Instagram accounts for great pictures and videos from the great week in St. Albert sports and activities. Good luck to all of our winter sports teams as they wind down their respective seasons and compete in the postseason.
