2018 Football Awards

It was a senior moment at last night's St. Albert Football Banquet as upperclassmen swept all three major awards.

Reed Miller took home the E.R. McDonald Sportsmanship award as he endured a near season-ending Jones fracture in late June. Despite his lack of playing time, Miller never wavered in supporting his Falcon teammates and was a welcome addition for the season-defining AHSTW game.

The Al Leber Spirit of St. Albert went to Dillon "Bob" White who personifies the award's namesake. In addition to bleeding Green & Gold, White wears his emotion on his jersey, always playing for and representing the name on the front.

Lineman Adam Gubbels is the 2018 Season Most Valuable Player. Gubbels is a throwback style player who is tough, hard-nosed and could play anywhere on the field. His talents were most needed in the trenches, but he demonstrated his versatility with a rushing touchdown late in the season.

Fifteen Falcons flooded the District All Academic Team, in alphabetical order they are: Conner Cerny, Greg Fagan, Jared Gast, Bennett Gronstal, Drew Gronstal, Adam Gubbels, Cael McLaren, Jeff Miller, Reed Miller, Isaiah Moore, Ben O'Neil, Cy Patterson, Sam Rallis, Sam Wilber and Lance Wright.

An impressive note on the school side of this year's football squad, the team held a 3.48 Grade Point Average throughout the season. Also worth mentioning is the fact freshman are not eligible to be officially recognized on the District All Academic Team. Several ninth graders would have qualified for the 2018 team according to head coach Pat Ryan.

Academic success is almost a given for St. Albert, but the winners of the 2018 Traveling Challenge Cup trophy know it takes more than just academic prowess to achieve well-rounded school success.

Thirteen Falcons were named to an all-district team for their accomplishments on the football field.

All District 1st Team: Conner Cerny, Adam Gubbels, Sam Rallis, Dillon White, Lance Wright

All District 2nd Team:  Aiden Antisdel, Jack Geier, Bennett Gronstal, Jeff Miller, Cy Patterson, Sam Wilber

All District Honorable Mention: Jared Gast, Cael McLaren

As hospitable as the banquet hall was on Sunday night, the Falcons would much rather celebrate their season after Thanksgiving. A conference room at a Cedar Rapids hotel might not carry the grace and history of St. Peter's, but as the seven graduating seniors know, the Subway sandwiches taste so much sweeter in Northeast Iowa.

A rookie head coach had his team controlling their own destiny with a half left in the season. Fate would not have it for this year's team, but the foundation has been laid for years to come. It won't be too long before the team bus is pulling into a hotel parking lot near the University of Northern Iowa, ready to unload Falcon Fury under a domed sky.
