2018 Saintes Softball Senior Night 2

For about 15 years our dad has called the softball field home. What started out as patching a hole in the original concession stand so people would stop breaking in, has turned into his passion.  The original field was a dirt infield with a gravel warning track, an old broken shed, old dugouts, and a couple wooden bleachers. Over the years, with the help of many others, he has built 2 storage sheds and a home-team dugout; installed a sound system; maintained and often fixed the sprinkler system; purchased a new drag and four-wheeler for the infield; rebuilt the backstop; and replaced the warning track.

Each year he will repair any breaks or bends in the outfield fence, install the fence guard and windscreen; set up and tear down the batting cages; hang the sponsorship banners (he also finds sponsors); replace light bulbs and breakers in the scoreboard and repaint it as needed; and prepare the concession stand for the upcoming game. Before each game, over his lunch hour or the night before, he will come up here, drag, water, and chalk the field, all without acknowledgement. Finally, since he started his work here, he has helped announce and keep score of all the home games.

Now, whether you are familiar with our dad or not, you can likely make out his discomfort with this situation, he would never want to be recognized. However, as his daughters, we feel he deserves this much needed recognition for all he has done, and will continue to do for the field. If he was talking we know he would say he hasn’t done this alone and would like to thank each and every one of those people that have helped him towards all the improvements to the field. We also know he would especially like to thank his wife Rachele, our mom, for understanding all his weekends and late nights here, worried that he may fall off a ladder or get electrocuted. And most importantly, for letting the cheese pump become décor on our kitchen table.

Although this was originally to improve our softball experience while in junior high and high school, he has continued to do this because he cares about all the past, present, and future Saintes softball players as well. Due to his timeless service and dedication, this is one of the most beautiful fields in the area to play on. Thanks for all you do, Dad. We love you!
