Charlie's Prediction Time

My annual 'disclaimer' which I essentially took from my opening column last year...

It's the start of the new year and we have a ton of new viewers to the website (thank you & make sure you tell a friend - especially our younger parents) so lets get started with a little brief history and information for all our newbie's...

Vince Rew & I bought stalbertsportsfan.com in the fall of 2004 from cyanetsports.com and thus this begins stalbertsportsfan's 11th season covering St. Albert! Vince & I eventually sold the site to your current owner, Owen Burgin, and now I'm a volunteer.

Over the years, some don't know, some have been confused and some just don't remember or 'get it' so let's be clear: St. Albert does not own this website. They have NO control on our content. They are gracious enough to let us use their logo's and we in turn promote and highlight the school - mainly high school 'stuff'. If you don't like something you see on the site - don't call or email the school. They don't own it, control it or have access to it.

That being said, we have a VERY good & strong relationship with the school. We love all things green & gold just like you do! We try and partner with the school and their interests and 99.9% of the time if they ask for something we try and accomodate. However, once in awhile we'll differ or offer another opinion than what is being presented.

And finally, we're not professionals on this site.  We're all volunteers.  If you really want well written, gripping reading or interviews, please see Kevin White and his staff at The Nonpareil or Derek Martin and his staff at KMA...

So let's get started with 2014-2015...

I think it's fair to say that over the years that St. Albert fans have been known to get a hard time for being overly passionate fans.  Deservedly so at times - like the time at the Boys State Basketball Tourney when the opposing team got the Sportsmanship Award and many of our fans booed.  Funny to some, not cool to others.  Well for those in the community that think we could do a lot better & for those that like to take shots from the outside I present the following... In St. Albert's first trip thru the Hawkeye 10 in 2013-2014 the school won the overall Sportsmanship Award!! Don't believe me? Click here  It's like golf, the lower the score the better...  Great job everyone!!!

After years of rumors that the SA vs LC football series would be coming to an end, it's finally happened.  The Falcons won the recent 16 year series 10-6 and Coach Culjat was 4-1 in his 5 years against the Titans.  With that, Lewis Central is still nice enough to let us use their field tonight!

About that... I'm about as old school as it gets.  Frankly, I'm probably one of 2 or 3 people that would have voted to stay with the Gold helmets instead of the green.  However, as much I'd love a good mud-bowl game, the decision to move the game away from Al Leber Field was a good one that I fully support - for what very little that's worth.

So let's get it on...

For our younger folks, the series against TJ is not a brand new one.  It went away when we picked up LC in the late 90's.  Like all things, the pendulum swings back the other way and what's old is new again.

To say the two programs have each changed dramatically since they last played in 1998 would be putting it mildly.  Tonight, one team looks to embark on a new upward tradition while another tries to hold on to their tradition with a bunch of super-youngsters...

As I said, these programs are different now than 20 years ago but for those in green & gold that think this should be an easy W, let's take a trip down memory lane in the series:

1991: SA beats TJ 24-8 on it's way to it's 1st ever perfect regular season.
1992: TJ won defensive battle 9-5.
1993: SA won 28-0.
1994: SA won 24-12.
1995: TJ won in dramatic fashion 21-20
1996: SA blanked the Jackets 19-0.
1997: TJ won 14-6 in a game filled with All-Stars.
1998: SA won 6-0 and eventually went to the Quarterfinals for the 2nd time ever.

This year will be the barbell approach with the Falcons.  Big Senior class, skinny Junior & Sophomore classes and then a big Freshmen class.  Many of the Frosh will have to play and it looks like 3 will start.  That'll be great in November, but they'll be plenty of butterflies and nervous energy going thru the field, the sidelines and the stands.  But if ever a group of youth was ready for the challenge, these kids would be it...

TJ is huge up front.  It'll be interesting to see how our 152 & 165 lb guys hold up.  Hopefully they learned some Judo or something in the offseason to 'work the hands'.  So I don't see big holes for the Falcons tonight to showcase their dual halfback threats.  With that, Travis Miller must have a solid game at QB picking up first downs and hanging on to the ball.  If not, the defense better be ready.

Speaking of the defense, this unit has something to prove.  On PAPER, they could be the most unheralded group we've had in a long time.  You're also going to see some baby faces out their in key spots.  Sometimes that's ok though but going up against a 4A school to start could prove to be too much.  We shall see...

Enough rambling - I think the Falcons trail early, get nervous in the 2nd, then settle down & make adjustments and eventually pull away late.  But, not by as much as some of the local experts think...

St. Albert wins 30-13
