Betty Petratis

Elizabeth Finerty Petratis, age 92, of Beebeetown and long term Council Bluffs resident, passed away November 10, 2018. Betty was born November 9, 1926, at Mercy Hospital, in Council Bluffs, and grew up on a farm east of Beebeetown, Iowa. Betty attended St. Joseph's, in Neola, Iowa, and then graduated from BeeBeetown High School in 1944.

Betty entered the Sisters of Mercy nursing school in Council Bluffs as a member of the Cadet Nursing Corps in 1944. She graduated in two years as a Registered Nurse and maintained a 46 year career in this field that she loved. As a practicing nurse she worked at Mercy Hospital, the Cogley Clinic with Dr. William O. Griffith and Western Electric. She was a member of the St. Patricks Church and Alter & Rosary Society, Western Electric Telephone Pioneers, the Association of Occupational Nurses and the American Heart Association.

Betty was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Betty became a widow at age 37 with six young kids under the age of 13 years old. In tough times, she persevered and often said "Where there's a will, there's a way". Her unrelenting strength and love for her family kept her and children together in the Harrison St. neighborhood. Loved and admired by all who knew her, Betty Petratis will be greatly missed.
